SPECIAL ABILITIES

20101001-Night-Dragon

Night Drake by Pia Wannachaiwong.

Sonic Breath: A night drake can, as a standard action, release an ultrasonic cry that creates a sonic pressure wave. This attack is a cone that has a range of 180 feet and a spread in a 40 ft. radius and deals 5d6 points of sonic damage (DC 16 Reflex for Half). The save DC is constitution based.

Speed Surge (Ex) Three times per day as a swift action, a flame drake may draw on its draconic heritage for a boost of strength and speed to take an additional move action in that round.

This nocturnal dragon is dark scaled, has large eyes, and hunts during the night.

Night Drakes are nocturnal dragons that live in the hills and mountains.  People think of them as degenerate black dragons, but that isn't true. They have the rage and temper of black dragons, but are not brutal bullies to the territory they inhabit.  They do extract tribute, and they do take what they need to survive.  They can also visicously attack those who attempt to attack them.

Occassionally, in dragon terms, they will organize themselves in a "rampage."  These rampages have an alpha drake, who often gets the best pickings of the kill. Such packs are made up of siblings who only separate during the mating season.  A night drake pack is organized around the "first among equals", although the alpha gets the best pickings of the kill and is often chosen first to be mated.

Night Drakes actually mate once a year, but do little to raise their offspring. A female lays a clutch of four to eight eggs, but abandons her young as soon as they hatch. Forest drake hatchlings immediately band together in a rampage.

While few survive so long, forest drakes can live up to 200 years. Forest drakes are typically about 10 feet long with equally long tails, and weigh around 1,000 pounds.
